Dumpster Rental vs Junk Removal: Which One Do You Need?
For a big cleanout or a remodel, rent a dumpster. For a few bulky items, hire a junk removal crew or use your city’s bulk pickup. A crew does the lifting and prices the job by how much of its truck your load fills. A roll-off dumpster is priced by size and the week, and you load it at your own pace.
One national cost guide says renting a dumpster often costs less, since you do the loading yourself. Our standard rental gives you 7 days to fill the can. Clearing out a house or tearing out a kitchen? Residential dumpster rental puts a 30 or 40 yard roll-off on your driveway or property.
Dump 1 rents roll-off dumpsters. We drop the can, you fill it, and we haul the can away. The prices below come from two national cost guides. They are market numbers, not our price list.
How Do Dumpster Rental and Junk Removal Compare?
The main split is who does the lifting. The price and the timing follow from that.
| Junk removal | Roll-off dumpster rental | |
|---|---|---|
| Who loads it | The crew lifts and loads | You and your helpers |
| How it is priced | By how much of the truck your load fills | By can size and the rental week |
| How much fits | A full truckload is about 13 to 17 cubic yards, per one guide | A 30 or 40 yard can, named for the cubic yards it holds |
| Timing | The crew loads it all during the visit | Same-day delivery or a scheduled drop day, then 7 days to load with us |
| What it will not take | Most junk removal companies will not take hazardous waste | Our cans take no paint, chemicals or other hazardous material |
| Best fit | A few bulky items, or no one to lift | A big cleanout or a remodel |
A full junk truckload is about half of a 30 yard can. A 40 yard can holds more still. Either way, hazardous material stays out. Read what you can put in a dumpster in Texas before you load.
How Much Does Junk Removal Cost Compared to a Dumpster?
These are market numbers, not our price list. They come from two national cost guides.
- A typical junk removal job: most people spend $133 to $372, one national cost guide says. A second guide says most homeowners spend $150 to $350.
- A full junk truckload: the first guide lists $600 to $800 for 13 to 17 cubic yards.
- Labor: the first guide puts labor at $100 to $300 of a junk removal bill.
- A 30 yard dumpster: the first guide lists $300 to $725 a week.
- A 40 yard dumpster: the same guide lists $350 to $800 a week.
In the first guide, a 30 yard can for a week lists lower than a full junk truckload. That holds at both ends of the range. The can also holds close to twice as much. The guide’s reason: you handle the loading yourself.
Small jobs flip the math. The two typical-job ranges for junk removal run mostly below the weekly range for a 30 yard can. If you only have a few pieces, a crew may be the smaller bill.
A dumpster quote still moves with weight and rental days. See what dumpster rental costs in Fort Worth for what drives the number.
When Does Junk Removal Make More Sense?
Junk removal fits a small load. Think of an old couch and a broken treadmill. A crew carries them out, loads them and drives off.
It also fits when no one can lift. Heavy furniture down a staircase is hard work, and a junk removal crew does that part for you.
Space matters too. A roll-off needs a spot on the driveway or the property. The truck needs a straight run to back in and clear space overhead, with no low wires or branches. If your lot has no room for a can, a crew may fit better.
In Fort Worth, the city’s monthly bulk pickup may handle a few big items on its own.
When Is a Roll-Off Dumpster the Better Pick?
A roll-off fits a job with a lot of debris and people to load it. Whole-house cleanouts, estate cleanouts, remodels and roof tear-offs fill a can fast. Landlords use them to turn over a unit between tenants.
You set the pace. Our standard rental is 7 days, so you can load a little each evening. Need it longer, or need the full can emptied and brought back? Call, and we will set it up.
Timing differs too. A junk removal crew loads everything during a booked visit. We offer same-day delivery or a scheduled drop day. Call in the morning and a can can often be on the ground that afternoon. Our same-day dumpster rental page covers what to have ready.
Our roll-off dumpster rental comes in two sizes. A 30 yard dumpster suits many cleanouts and remodels. A 40 yard dumpster takes bulky, light loads in big volume. Heavy debris like shingles or tile can reach a weight limit before the can looks full. Tell us what is going in, and see the dumpster size guide for help picking.
We set the can on your driveway or on the property. Check with your HOA and your city before a can goes in the street; we will talk it through when you call.
What Does Fort Worth’s Bulk Pickup Take?
Large household items, within limits. The City of Fort Worth’s bulk collection page sets these rules:
- Collection is monthly, at the curb, for residential homes.
- Only one pile per household, up to 10 cubic yards. That is about 8 feet long, 6 feet wide and 6 feet tall.
- The pile goes out by 7 a.m. Monday of your assigned week. Crews have until the following Saturday at 5 p.m. to pick it up.
- No contractor remodeling and demolition debris, such as shingles, wallboard and lumber.
- No dirt, rocks, concrete or ceramic tile.
The city also runs four drop-off stations open to homeowners and some renters. Check the city’s page for what each one takes.
The 10 cubic yard cap is about a third of a 30 yard can. A kitchen gut or a roof job can leave the very debris the page rules out. For that work, plan on a roll-off or a hauler.
Burleson draws a similar line. The City of Burleson’s FAQ lists brick, building materials, roofing materials and shingles among items crews cannot collect. Its weekly small bulk collection is for 3 cubic yards or less.
